How to improve your chances of being cited in Perplexity

By the MentionedOn team

How to check business discovery, citations, and agent tasks on individual platforms.

A useful Perplexity visibility project starts with one question your page answers particularly well. Check that the public page can be retrieved, make its evidence easy to assess, and record the exact citations in comparable responses.

What the platform documents

Perplexity documents PerplexityBot as a crawler intended to surface and link websites in search results, distinct from foundation-model training. It also documents a separate user-request fetcher. Crawl eligibility alone does not guarantee a citation. Perplexity's crawler documentation.

Check access at the page level

Inspect the relevant public URL, its robots rules, status, canonical, and the actual content returned. A homepage loading in your browser does not establish that the specific evidence page is accessible to the search crawler.

Use the provider's published crawler information when diagnosing a firewall issue. Keep private routes protected and avoid broad security changes based only on a user-agent string. A narrow public-page diagnosis is more useful than disabling protections across the site.

Give the answer a primary source

Original examples can be more useful than another unsourced overview. Publish a reproducible method, a labeled sample, and the limits of the conclusion. Put an answer summary near the top, then provide enough detail for a reader to check it.

For product comparisons, include the exact use case, the evidence behind each capability, and unknowns. Keep the page current when the product changes. Cite other companies' documentation without implying they endorse your evaluation.

Distinguish being cited from being chosen

Your guide can be cited while a competitor is recommended. Record those outcomes separately. Also distinguish a link to your homepage from a link to the exact research or product page. The latter tells you which source actually entered the answer.

Use a fixed set of buyer questions. Preserve the query, response, time, visible mode, cited URLs, and recommendation. Repeated checks with different constraints are different samples, not directly comparable ranking positions.

Turn a missing citation into a specific test

Inspect what the cited pages contribute: a definition, comparison, product detail, or original evidence. If your page lacks that information, improve the relevant section. If it already answers the question well, check discovery and accessibility before creating more content.

Use manual Perplexity observations alongside MentionedOn's documented monitoring methods. Do not treat every API answer as identical to the consumer product. Track attributable referrals and qualified actions, and report sample size and missing measurement when comparing periods.

A repeatable starting prompt

Which tools fit [specific workflow] with [constraints]? Use current primary sources, compare limitations, and cite the page supporting each important claim.

Adapt the bracketed fields once, then keep the wording stable for comparable checks.

Does allowing PerplexityBot guarantee a citation?

No. It addresses crawler access. The page still needs to be relevant to the question, and the actual response must be checked before reporting a citation.

Record the evidence

Use the AI visibility audit worksheet to preserve the question, answer, sources, and next edit. See all platform guides for differences in the measurement method.
