A local owner asks AI for a local bank.
The answer names a megabank.
Small business owners, homebuyers and HELOC shoppers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity who to bank with before they call anyone. The assistant names two or three lenders. If your bank is not one of them, your relationship bankers never get the first conversation.

What community bank marketing and retail banking leaders are seeing
Owners arrive already talking to a national bank
Your commercial bankers win when they get a meeting. More often now, the owner has already applied online somewhere else, because the first name they heard was not yours.
HELOC and mortgage shoppers compare everyone but you
They show up with two offers in hand and ask you to match. You were never on the list they started from, so you are pricing against a decision already half made.
Customers ask about a branch you closed
You sent the notices and updated the website, and people still drive to the old location or call about hours you changed last year.
Fee questions you can't place
A prospect asks about a monthly fee or an overdraft charge that is not on your current schedule. They read it somewhere, and it was not your site.
The common thread: the shortlist now forms inside an AI answer, before anyone visits your site, calls, or fills in a form. Your name is either in that answer or it is not.
What you're already paying for, and where it stops
None of this is wasted. Each one does its job. None of them was built to put your name in an AI answer.
Rate ads and HELOC promotions
An ad runs where it is bought. An AI answer is written from pages, listings and articles the assistant can read, and a rate in a display ad or a promo image is not something it quotes back.
An SEO agency and branch location pages
Ranking in Google earns a spot in a list of links. An assistant writes one answer with two or three names, and it leans on sources that describe in plain words what you lend, to whom, and where. A strong Google position does not guarantee a mention.
SBA lender status and the SBA's own matching tool
SBA Lender Match helps an owner who has already decided to look for an SBA loan. Many owners start earlier, with a plain question to an assistant, and the assistant answers from whatever it can read about local lenders.
Sponsorships, chamber seats and local presence
A strong local reputation lives in people's heads and in event programs. An assistant can only repeat what is written somewhere it reads: your site, your listings, local news and business journals.
What a missed decision is worth
A customer who never hears your name does not show up in any report. Put your own numbers in to size what that costs over the years they would have stayed.
Example numbers. Replace them with yours.
Lifetime revenue from one year of missed customers
$168,000
per customer per year × years they stay × missed per year
Take last year's net interest and fee income from relationships opened in the past three years and divide by the number of those relationships; use a separate, higher figure if you are sizing small business accounts alone.

What AI gets wrong about community banks
Things to check in the answers about you. The evidence explorer keeps the full text of every answer, so your team can read exactly what was said.
A closed or consolidated branch still listed
Banks must notify branch customers at least 90 days before a closing. Assistants do not read those notices. Check whether AI still sends people to a branch you closed or lists hours you changed.
Fees from an old schedule
An assistant may quote a monthly or overdraft fee from an archived page or a third-party roundup. Check whether the fees in the answer match your current schedule.
Rates with no date or no APY
Your own advertising must state deposit rates as an annual percentage yield. An AI answer follows no such rule and may repeat an old promotional rate. Check what rate, if any, it attaches to your name.
"They don't do business lending"
If your SBA, equipment or commercial real estate lending is described only in PDFs or in a banker's head, check whether AI says you only offer personal accounts.
Mixed up with a bank of a similar name
Many banks share words like First, Citizens, Farmers or National. Check whether the answer attaches another bank's products, locations or history to you.
Deposit safety misstated
Check whether AI suggests a small bank is riskier for insured deposits. FDIC insurance covers deposits at every insured bank up to the same standard amount, per depositor and ownership category, whatever the bank's size.
Your first 30 days
Steps your own team can take, in this order. Monitoring shows which of them moved the answer.
Publish one plain page for each decision a customer makes
Business checking, SBA and small business loans, HELOCs, mortgages. For each: who it is for, what the process looks like, what to bring, and how to reach a named banker role. In text, not only in PDFs or brochure images.
Put rates and fee schedules in text, with an effective date
Publish the current fee schedule and rate tables as HTML with the date they took effect, and retire or redirect old PDFs so there is one current version to find. They go through the same compliance review as today; only the format changes.
Clean up branch facts everywhere at once
When a branch closes or hours change, update your locator, every map and business listing, and holiday hours on the same day, and redirect the old branch page to the nearest open location.
Get written about where local owners read
Local business journal coverage, chamber directories, and short customer stories about local companies you financed (with their permission and your compliance sign-off) give assistants something specific to repeat.
Measure the questions, then re-check
Run the free scan today, track the business, mortgage and HELOC questions in each market you serve, and read the recorded answers. Two to four weeks after each change, see which answers moved and who is still named instead of you.
The plan that fits most community banks
Concierge
From $999/mo, quoted from your free scan.
Done for you: we do the work for your brand or your clients.
Community banks usually cover several markets and lines of business (retail, mortgage, commercial) with a small marketing team and a busy compliance queue. Concierge does the work and hands every draft to your compliance review. If you have the people in-house, Growth tracks several branch markets on one account.
A mention is not a signed customer. We measure whether and how you are named in sampled AI answers, show who is named instead, and rank the fixes. We do not promise placements.
Questions community bank marketing and retail banking leaders ask us
Our business comes from relationship bankers and referrals.+
It should, and that does not change. What changes is the step before the referral. An owner who asks an assistant for a local business bank gets a shortlist, and a banker who is not on it never gets the call. Being named keeps your bankers in the first conversation.
We are already an active SBA lender. Isn't that enough?+
It helps the owners who already know to look for SBA lenders. Many start with a broader question, like which local bank is good for a line of credit. The assistant answers from what it can read, so the scan shows whether your lending is described anywhere it looks.
Why would AI pick a national bank over us?+
Assistants repeat what is written most clearly and most often. National banks publish a lot of plain-language product pages. A community bank often keeps the same detail in PDFs, rate images and its bankers' heads. That is fixable, and it is mostly formatting work, not new claims.
Compliance will slow down anything we publish.+
Most of the fixes are facts you already publish: rates, fees, branch hours, the loans you make. Nothing here requires new claims. Anything we draft is a draft for your compliance team, and you decide what goes live.
Can you check whether AI quotes our current rates and fees?+
We record the full text of every answer, so your team can read exactly what each assistant said about your rates, fees and branches, including anything wrong. There is no automated rate checker; a person on your team compares the recorded answer to your current schedule.
Do you need customer data, and can you guarantee results?+
No to both. Monitoring only asks public AI assistants the questions a prospective customer would ask and records the answers. The assistants decide their own answers, so nobody can promise a placement. We show whether and how you are named, who is named instead, and which fixes moved the answer.
