How to improve your business visibility in ChatGPT Search

By the MentionedOn team

How to check business discovery, citations, and agent tasks on individual platforms.

Start ChatGPT Search visibility work with access and answer quality. Make the relevant page retrievable, then give a buyer enough specific evidence to compare your business. Track the exact answers and citations instead of treating one mention as a permanent rank.

What the platform documents

OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler and GPTBot as a separate training crawler. Their robots.txt settings are independent. ChatGPT-User supports some user-initiated visits and is not the control for automatic search inclusion. OpenAI's crawler documentation.

Check the search path without opening private content

Review robots.txt for the public pages you want discoverable, then check whether your CDN actually serves the intended page rather than a challenge or login wall. Use the provider's current crawler documentation when interpreting logs. A user-agent label alone does not authenticate a request.

Keep dashboards, customer records, and private reports protected. Search readiness does not require weakening account access. Test your public service page, comparison, and evidence page as an anonymous visitor, including their important text and internal links.

Give a comparison question a usable answer

Choose a concrete buyer question such as which local provider handles a particular job in a particular area. State service fit, exclusions, pricing basis if available, credentials you can substantiate, and the next step. Provide sources or original examples for claims that a reader should verify.

For software, compare supported use cases and limits rather than declaring a universal winner. Date material product facts and revisit them when they change. A helpful existing comparison can be improved without creating a second page targeting the same question.

Separate branded checks from discovery

Ask an unbranded buyer question and record whether search was used, which businesses were recommended, and the exact citations. Separately ask a branded factual question to check whether the answer describes your business correctly. Do not combine those two tasks into one visibility score.

Repeat a fixed question set with the location, mode, and account context recorded. A model accessed through an API is not automatically the same experience as the consumer ChatGPT application. Label captures according to the surface that actually produced them.

Use the evidence to choose one edit

When an answer gets a fact wrong, inspect the cited page before editing yours. The issue may be an old directory entry, an ambiguous product name, or a missing limitation. Correct the primary source you control and request a factual correction elsewhere when appropriate.

MentionedOn helps organize visibility observations on its supported surfaces. Use its documented method alongside manual ChatGPT checks, and preserve the distinction between API model captures and consumer-app behavior. Crawler access is an eligibility step, not a recommendation guarantee.

A repeatable starting prompt

Which [type of business] in [location] can handle [specific job and constraints]? Search current public sources, compare the relevant options, and cite the pages supporting your claims.

Adapt the bracketed fields once, then keep the wording stable for comparable checks.

OpenAI documents search and training crawler settings separately. Review OAI-SearchBot for search visibility and GPTBot for training preferences; do not treat them as the same setting.

Record the evidence

Use the AI visibility audit worksheet to preserve the question, answer, sources, and next edit. See all platform guides for differences in the measurement method.
