Pages versus entities
This is the whole distinction, and it explains almost every case of this symptom. Google's unit is the page. It can rank you first without ever needing to decide what kind of business you are, because the customer will click through and work it out themselves.
An assistant has to commit. It has to say "call Smith Plumbing, they do same-day water heater work in Folsom" and be right. That takes a level of certainty about you as an entity that page ranking never required, and certainty comes from agreement across sources.
Winner-take-most instead of a page of ten
A page of search results has ten slots and a second page behind it. An assistant names two or three businesses and stops. Being ranked seventh on Google still earns some clicks. Being the seventh-best-covered business in an assistant's view earns nothing at all, because there is no seventh slot.
Where the two systems overlap
The overlap is real and it is good news. Google's own guidance for performing well in its AI experiences is largely the same advice it gives for search: unique, useful content, technical accessibility, and accurate structured data. Almost nothing on the AI side asks you to undo SEO work. It asks you to add a layer that traditional SEO never needed.
The usual culprit
For businesses with strong rankings and no AI presence, the cause is nearly always the same: everything the internet knows about you lives on your own website, and nowhere else. Google is comfortable ranking a single strong site. An assistant wants corroboration, and one source corroborates nothing.
What each system actually needs
Read down the middle column for what you have probably already done, and down the right column for what is missing.
| Signal | What Google search rewards | What an AI assistant needs |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of ranking | A page, matched to a query. | A business, named inside a sentence, with no second page to fall back to. |
| Content | Depth and usefulness on the page that ranks. | One checkable, quotable claim, ideally in the first two sentences. |
| Corroboration | Helpful. You can rank on your own site alone. | Close to essential. Two independent sources saying the same thing beats one saying it beautifully. |
| Keywords | Matched, with a lot of tolerance for synonyms. | Matched to the exact job phrasing a customer speaks. Assistants are literal about services. |
| Links | A primary ranking signal. | Indirect. A link helps a page get found, but the citation is earned by what the page says about you. |
| Structured data | Enables rich results. Not a ranking factor. | Not required, but the cheapest way to make your facts unambiguous to a machine. |
| Reviews | Rating and count feed the local pack. | The text itself, because that is what can be quoted. |
| Consistency of name and address | Helps local ranking. | Decides whether two sources are recognized as the same business at all. |
| Freshness | Matters for some queries. | Matters for most, because a retrieval system uses dates as a cheap proxy for still being true. |
| Position | Ten slots, then more pages. | Two or three names. There is no page two. |
If you can only act on one row this month, act on corroboration. It is the row where strong-SEO businesses are most often at zero.

Entity SEO
Optimizing to be understood as a business rather than to rank a page is called entity SEO, and the shift from ten links to one composed answer is why people talk about answer engines instead of search engines. If your SEO reporting looks healthy while AI answers ignore you, this is the vocabulary for the gap.
- Will good SEO eventually make AI notice me?
- Partly, over time, because the same signals feed both. But traditional SEO has no reason to build corroboration across sources, and that is the piece assistants weigh most heavily.
- Does my SEO agency's reporting cover this?
- Usually not by default. Rank tracking and traffic reports have no field for whether an assistant named you, which is why it is possible to have a good report and a bad answer.
