Answer Engine
Answer engine — An answer engine is a system that responds to a query with a single synthesized answer instead of a ranked list of links — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, and Gemini are examples.
The distinction from a search engine is the output. A search engine hands you ten links and lets you choose; an answer engine reads across sources and hands you one composed response, often naming a few specific brands or businesses and sometimes citing where it got them.
This compresses the customer's choice. Where a page of links gave ten businesses a chance to be clicked, an answer names two or three. For businesses, that makes being in the answer the whole game — and being absent nearly invisible.
Key points
- →Output is one synthesized answer, not a list.
- →Named businesses win the consideration set instantly.
- →Some answer engines cite sources; being a cited source compounds.
