The chain of custody
Think of the profile as the source of record. A roundup writer looks you up, a directory scrapes the category, a review aggregator inherits the name and address, and each of those pages is later retrieved by an assistant answering a customer's question. Every hop is a chance for a wrong category or a missing service to be copied forward.
This is also why fixing the profile pays off unevenly. Correcting the primary category can change what a dozen downstream pages say about you over the following months. Adding a fifth photo changes nothing.
The fields that actually matter for AI answers
Google publishes guidance on representing your business and on local ranking, and it is worth reading in full. For AI answers specifically, the ranking of importance is different from the ranking for the map pack. What an assistant needs is unambiguous, quotable facts, so the text fields outrank the visual ones.
One warning about the description
The business description is one of the few places you write free text that propagates widely. Most are wasted on adjectives. Use it to name the jobs you do, the towns you serve, and one thing that is true of you and not of your competitors. If an assistant is going to paraphrase anything about you, this is often the sentence it paraphrases.
And one about Google's own AI
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are a separate case from ChatGPT. They sit inside Search and draw on Google's own index and local data, so profile quality reaches them by a much shorter path. If Google's AI surfaces are where your customers are, profile work is even more directly rewarded.
Profile fields, ranked by what they feed
Work down this table inside your Business Profile. The right column is why it matters to an assistant that will never see the dashboard.
| Field | What good looks like | What it feeds |
|---|---|---|
| Primary category | The single category a customer would use for the job you most want. Not the broadest one. | Determines how directories and roundups classify you, which decides which questions you are even eligible for. |
| Secondary categories | Every service you genuinely offer, none you do not. | Widens the set of job-level questions where a source can name you. |
| Services list | Each service entered individually with the customer's words, with the short descriptions filled in. | This text propagates into aggregator pages that are retrieved for specific-job questions. |
| Business description | The jobs, the towns, and one specific, checkable differentiator. No adjectives. | Frequently the sentence an assistant paraphrases when it describes you. |
| Name | Your real-world name exactly. No stuffed keywords, which also violates Google's guidelines. | Name consistency is how an assistant decides you and the entity in another source are the same business. |
| Address and service area | Either a real address or a service area, chosen honestly, and matching your website. | Disagreement between profile and site is one of the most common reasons a business resolves ambiguously. |
| Hours, including special hours | Current, with holidays set. Nothing reads worse than being called closed when you are open. | Hours are copied into many sources; a stale one becomes a wrong AI answer that is hard to trace. |
| Review replies | Reply naming the service that was performed. | Your replies are readable text on a heavily-retrieved page. Most owners waste them on thank-yous. |
| Products, where relevant | Real products with real prices. | Price is one of the most-asked and least-published facts in local search. |
| Photos | Enough to look real and current. | Least important for AI answers. Do it last, not first. |
After any change, note the date. Downstream sources update on their own schedule, so a profile fix that appears to do nothing for three weeks may still be working.

Entity consistency
The reason all of this works is a concept called entity resolution: a machine deciding that the business in one source and the business in another are the same thing. Marketers call the underlying discipline entity SEO, and the profile is where it starts for a local business.
- If I fix my profile, how long until AI answers change?
- The profile itself updates in hours. The pages assistants read from it update on their own schedule, so plan in weeks, and re-check rather than assume.
- Does posting Google Posts help?
- Barely, for AI answers. Posts are short-lived and rarely propagate. The category, services, and description fields are where the leverage is.
