Why this scam works so well
For twenty years there has usually been a paid version of visibility. Ads, sponsored listings, featured placement, priority in a directory. Owners reasonably assume the same must exist here, and that assumption is exactly what a certain kind of vendor sells against.
It does not exist for recommendations. Assistants compose their answer from retrieved sources and training. There is no field in that process where money enters. Ads may appear elsewhere in these products over time, and if they do they will be labeled, in the way search ads are labeled, and they will still not be the recommendation.
What you actually can pay for
Plenty, and some of it is worth paying for. The distinction that matters is whether you are buying a change in the sources, which is real, or a change in the assistant, which is not.
Red flags, word for word
- "We will add your business to the ChatGPT index." There is no such index.
- "Guaranteed first position in AI answers." Nobody can guarantee a position in a generated sentence, and the position varies between runs of the same question.
- "We have a partnership with OpenAI for local listings." No such local listing partnership is available to resellers.
- "Our proprietary AI schema gets you indexed." Structured data is a public standard and is not a ranking or inclusion mechanism.
- "One-time fee, permanent placement." Answers change as sources and models change. Nothing here is permanent.
The honest version of the pitch
A legitimate provider says something like this: we will measure how often assistants name you today, fix your profile and your service pages, get you onto the two or three third-party pages that assistants actually retrieve for your trade, build a habit of review text that names the job, and re-measure so you can see whether it moved. That is real, it takes months, and it comes with no guarantee.
What you can buy, and what it actually moves
Use this before you sign anything. The right column is the honest expectation, not the sales pitch.
| What is being sold | Is it real | What it actually does |
|---|---|---|
| A listing inside ChatGPT | No | Nothing. This product does not exist. Walk away. |
| Guaranteed AI ranking | No | Nothing that can be honoured. Positions vary between runs of the same prompt. |
| Content written for your service pages | Yes | Real and often the highest-return spend, if it states checkable facts rather than adjectives. |
| Business Profile management | Yes | Real. Feeds nearly every downstream source. Verify they fix the category and services, not just post photos. |
| Digital PR and roundup placement | Yes, with care | Real when the target page genuinely ranks for your trade and city. Worthless on pages nobody retrieves. |
| Directory submission packages | Partly | One or two majors help. Bulk packages spend money on a bucket that is a minority of citations. |
| Structured data implementation | Yes | Real but modest. It makes your facts unambiguous. It is not an inclusion mechanism and no vendor's version is proprietary. |
| Review generation programs | Depends | Real if they help you ask properly. Illegitimate and risky if they write, incentivize, or gate reviews. |
| Monitoring and measurement | Yes | Real, and the only way to know whether any of the above worked. Cheap relative to the work it grades. |
A useful test question for any vendor: what will you measure, how often, and what will you show me if it did not work? Vendors selling the imaginary product cannot answer it.
You are looking for the term
Generative engine optimization
The legitimate half of this has a name: generative engine optimization, or GEO, sometimes answer engine optimization. It describes exactly the work in the right column of that table. If a proposal uses the term but cannot say what it will measure, the term is doing the work the evidence should be doing.
- Will there ever be ads in AI assistants?
- Possibly, and some products already carry sponsored placements elsewhere in the interface. That is a different thing from the recommendation itself, and it would be labeled.
- Is paying an agency for this a waste of money?
- Not if they are doing the real work and measuring it. It is a waste if they cannot tell you what they will measure or what a failure would look like.
