BrightLocal already includes AI visibility. When is a second tool still worth $99?

The short answer

Usually it is not. If the suite you already pay for shows you whether assistants name your business, and you are acting on what it shows, a second subscription buys you nothing, and the honest recommendation for most single-location businesses is to stay where you are. A second tool earns its place only when you need something a bundled feature does not give you: the full dated answer text rather than a score, all four assistants rather than a subset, or a report a non-marketer will actually open.

01The detail

Start with what you already own

An all-in-one local marketing suite does a lot of jobs a dedicated AI answer tracker does not do at all: building and syncing directory listings, monitoring and requesting reviews, tracking classic search rankings, auditing citations, and putting client-branded reports in front of clients. If you are paying for that stack, those jobs are the reason, and none of them are jobs an AI visibility tool can take over.

So the real question is narrower than it looks. It is not which tool is better. It is whether the AI-answer feature inside your existing plan is enough for the decisions you make each month.

The three things a bundled feature often does not give you

  1. The answer text itself. A count of mentions tells you what happened. The sentence the assistant wrote about you, with the links it cited, tells you why, and it is the thing you can hand to whoever writes your pages.
  2. Full assistant coverage on every question. Bundled features often sample one or two engines. If you only watch one, a drop on that engine reads as a drop everywhere, and a gain elsewhere is invisible.
  3. Something the owner will read. A suite dashboard is built for the person who lives in it. A one-page weekly summary in plain language is built for the person who does not.

Three reasons that are not good enough

  • Wanting a higher number. No tool moves your visibility; the work does. Two dashboards showing the same absence is just two invoices.
  • A competitor bought one. Their buying process is not evidence about your business.
  • It is cheap relative to the suite. Cheap and unused is worse than nothing, because it makes you feel measured when you are not.

Where a dedicated tool clearly loses

Be honest about the direction of the trade too. A dedicated AI answer tracker does not build citations, does not sync your listings, does not monitor or request reviews, does not track classic rankings, and does not produce agency-branded white-label reports. If you drop the suite to pay for the tracker, you lose all of that, and no amount of AI answer data replaces a wrong phone number on forty directories.

The test that actually settles it

Run the same five customer questions through the feature you already have and through a free check somewhere else, on the same day, and compare what you get back. If the two agree and your existing view already told you which competitor is winning and on which question, you have your answer and you should not buy anything. If one of them hands you a dated answer and named competitors while the other hands you a number with no evidence under it, you now know exactly what the second subscription is for.

02Use this

Ten minutes, then decide

Do these in order. Most people stop at the first group, which is the correct outcome and costs nothing.

1. Audit the plan you are already paying for

  • Open your current plan page and find the AI or answer-engine feature. Write down which assistants it names.
  • Find last month's output for it. If you cannot find any output, the feature is not the problem, the habit is.
  • Check whether it stores the answer text or only a count or score.
  • Check how many of your own questions it tracks, and whether you chose them or it did.
  • Check whether anyone other than you has ever opened it.

2. A second tool is worth it only if all three are true

  • You have acted on AI visibility at least once in the last quarter, so you know you will use the data.
  • Your existing feature is missing at least one of: the full dated answer, coverage of the assistants your customers use, named competitors per question.
  • The decision it would change is worth more per month than the subscription.

3. Before you cancel anything, confirm what you lose

  • Listing building and sync across directories. A dedicated AI tracker does not do this.
  • Review monitoring and review requests. Also not covered.
  • Classic rank tracking and citation audits. Also not covered.
  • White-label, agency-branded client reports. Not offered at all on the AI tracker side.

Descriptions of suite features reflect well-known public positioning as of their public pricing page, checked September 2026. Packaging in this category changes often, so confirm your own plan rather than trusting any comparison, including this one.

03What this is called

You are looking for the term

AI visibility monitoring

The feature you are comparing is AI visibility monitoring: a fixed question set, asked on a schedule, recording mention rate, citation rate, sentiment and competitor share of voice. It is one job. A local marketing suite does eight, and this is one of them.

04Also asked
Can I just do this by hand instead?
For five questions, once a month, yes. Open each assistant, ask the question the way a customer would, and write down who was named. That is enough to hold any vendor accountable and it costs nothing but the ten minutes.
Does running two tools give me a more accurate picture?
Not more accurate, just wider. Different tools sample different models on different days, so they will disagree at the edges. Treat any single reading as a sample, and only trust a direction that holds over several weeks.
