Local pack — The local pack (or map pack) is the block of three map-based business listings Google shows for local-intent searches — and while it's a classic SEO target, AI answers are becoming a separate, parallel shortlist you also have to win.
The local pack ranks businesses by relevance, distance, and prominence. It still matters, but it sits inside a results page that is increasingly topped by an AI Overview — and the businesses the Overview names may not be the same three in the pack.
That's the key point: ranking in the map pack does not guarantee you're in the AI answer. They draw on overlapping but distinct signals. A complete AI-visibility picture tracks both, because a customer might act on either.
