llms.txt

llms.txtllms.txt is a proposed plain-text file at the root of a website that offers AI systems a curated, easy-to-read guide to the site's most important content — an LLM-oriented cousin of robots.txt and sitemap.xml.

The idea is to hand models a clean map of what matters on your site — key pages, concise descriptions — in Markdown, so they can understand and represent you without wading through navigation and markup. Adoption is early and support varies by system.

It's worth knowing as part of the emerging AI-visibility toolkit, but it's not a silver bullet: no file makes a model recommend you if the broader signals aren't there. Treat it as a low-cost clarity aid alongside the fundamentals — structured data, authority, and a complete business profile.

Key points

  • A root-level Markdown guide to your site for LLMs.
  • Analogous to robots.txt / sitemap, but for AI comprehension.
  • Emerging and inconsistently supported — a complement, not a fix.
