Does Reddit decide what AI recommends?

The short answer

Not on its own. Community sources including Reddit are a genuine and sometimes decisive input in specific categories, and close to irrelevant in others. In our own citation corpus community platforms are one bucket among five, well behind business websites, so treating Reddit as the lever is a common and expensive misread.

01The detail

Where the belief comes from

It comes from a real observation. Ask an assistant a subjective consumer question and it will often surface a forum thread, because that is where opinions with reasons attached actually live. For "which of these two brands lasts longer", that is genuinely the best available source.

Local service questions are a different shape. "Who should I call for a burst pipe in Folsom tonight" is answered from profiles, service pages, and roundups, because those are the sources that contain names, hours, and service areas. Threads help when they exist and mostly do not exist at that granularity.

What our corpus shows

The panel below breaks the whole citation corpus into buckets and then names the sectors where Reddit specifically lands in the top five sources. Both figures come from the stored scans themselves, live. If your sector is on that list, community coverage is worth attention. If it is not, spending your month on Reddit is spending it on the wrong bucket.

If your sector is on the list

  • Do not astroturf. Undisclosed self-promotion gets removed, and communities are unusually good at spotting it. A removed thread cites nothing.
  • Answer questions in your trade honestly, under a real identity, without a pitch. Being the person who explained the thing is what gets quoted later.
  • Find the existing threads that already rank for your city and trade and add something genuinely useful to them. New threads are usually a worse investment than good comments on retrieved ones.
  • Accept that this is slow and unbankable. It is a supplement to profile and site work, never a substitute.

If it is not

Then this is settled: skip it. Put the hour into a service page or into asking three customers to mention the job in their review. Both are more reliable, and both are in the bucket that our own data says gets cited most.

Citation sources

What you are really asking about is the source mix behind an answer, tracked as citations and grouped by the kind of site they come from. Knowing your own sector's mix is what turns this from an argument into a decision.

05Also asked
Should I pay someone to post about my business on Reddit?
No. Undisclosed paid promotion breaks most community rules and gets removed, and removed content cites nothing. It also risks the account and the brand.
Do other community platforms count?
Yes. Our community bucket includes the major social and video platforms as well as forums, and their weight varies by sector in the same way.
