Reusable audit
A 30-minute local AI citation audit you can rerun
The audit is simple: run two fixed, unbranded local buyer prompts once across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Grok. Preserve the exact answers and citations in one ledger. Then choose one action supported by what you observed.
The output is a small, reproducible snapshot. It does not prove why an engine selected a business, predict future answers, or establish that one later edit caused a change.
Timed checklist
The full 30-minute run
00:00 to 04:00
Freeze the business facts
- Write the canonical business name, primary category, city or service area, website, and the one qualifier this audit will test.
- Choose one location. Multi-location brands should run a separate ledger for each location.
- Record today's date, timezone, and who is running the audit.
Output: A one-line scope statement that prevents the test from drifting.
04:00 to 07:00
Write two unbranded buyer prompts
- Prompt A, category discovery: Who are the best [category] providers in [city] for [service or constraint]?
- Prompt B, problem discovery: Who can help with [specific problem] in [city], and what makes each option a fit?
- Use the exact same wording in every engine. Do not name your business or hint that it should appear.
Output: Two prompts that represent a real decision, not a request for a vanity mention.
07:00 to 18:00
Run the prompts across five answer engines
- Open a new conversation in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Grok.
- Use the same browsing or search setting where the product offers one, and record whether it was on, off, automatic, or unavailable.
- Run both prompts once. Save the full answer or a share link before moving on.
Output: Up to ten timestamped answers. A failed or unavailable run stays in the ledger and is not silently dropped.
18:00 to 23:00
Extract mentions, citations, and facts
- Mark whether the exact business or an unambiguous name variant was mentioned.
- Record every cited URL or source label, including citations that support a competitor instead.
- Mark whether the owned website was directly linked and whether material business facts were accurate, wrong, or not stated.
Output: One ledger row per engine and prompt, with no interpretation hidden in prose notes.
23:00 to 27:00
Summarize the snapshot
- Count completed answers, brand mentions, owned-site citations, factual errors, and unique third-party domains.
- List the domains cited more than once. Repetition can identify sources worth inspecting, but it does not prove influence.
- Keep results by prompt and engine visible. Do not let one combined number hide where the gap occurred.
Output: A descriptive baseline, not a proprietary score and not a forecast.
27:00 to 30:00
Choose one evidence-backed action
- If access failed, fix crawl or WAF controls before rewriting content.
- If a fact was wrong, correct the canonical page and the strongest conflicting profile or directory.
- If competitors were supported by sources you lack, inspect what those pages prove and create or earn a legitimate equivalent only when relevant.
Output: One owner, one action, one due date, and a date for the next identical audit.
Test protocol
Keep each run comparable
Perfectly standardized tests are not possible across consumer answer engines. You can still remove the largest sources of avoidable drift and record what remains.
- Start clean. Use a new conversation and do not follow up before saving the first answer.
- Make geography explicit. Put the city or service area in the prompt instead of relying on inferred location.
- Do not prime. Keep the target brand out of discovery prompts and do not say which answer you expect.
- Record observable context. Note account state, search mode, location sharing, and interface when known.
- Preserve failures. A timeout, refusal, missing search mode, or unavailable product is part of the evidence.
- Do not edit the receipt. Keep the full answer even when the relevant excerpt is short.
Evidence ledger
One row per prompt and engine
The ledger is the durable artifact. It lets another person inspect the evidence, reproduce the query, and understand why a row was classified without relying on your memory.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Run ID | A stable identifier such as 2026-08-23-A-CHATGPT. |
| Date, time, timezone | When the answer was generated, not when the ledger was edited. |
| Engine and mode | Product name plus search, browsing, location, login, or account context you can observe. |
| Exact prompt | The complete prompt, preserved verbatim. |
| Mention | Yes, no, or ambiguous. Save the exact name variant when yes. |
| Owned-site citation | Yes or no, with the exact linked URL when available. |
| All cited sources | Every visible URL or source label, including sources for competitors. |
| Facts | Accurate, wrong, not stated, or mixed. Record the specific fact. |
| Evidence | Full answer, share URL, screenshot path, or exported transcript. |
| Notes | Failures, missing search mode, interface changes, or anything that limits comparison. |

Decide what counts before reading the result
Mention: yes
The answer names the canonical business or a variant that clearly refers to it. A generic term or substring does not count.
Citation: owned
The answer presents a clickable link to the business's controlled domain. A plain-text name without a link is a mention, not an owned citation.
Citation: third party
The answer links to an independent profile, directory, article, or other domain that supports a claim about the business or category.
Position
Record ordinal position only when the answer gives a clearly ordered list. Do not manufacture a rank from paragraph order.
Factual accuracy
Compare only material facts stated in the answer against the frozen facts from minute zero. Unstated information is not an error.
Snapshot summary
Report counts before percentages
With at most ten answers, the denominator matters. Write "3 of 10 completed answers mentioned the business" before shortening it to 30%. Keep unavailable runs outside the denominator and show how many were unavailable.
- Mention coverage
- Answers with an unambiguous brand mention ÷ completed answers.
- Owned-site citation coverage
- Answers with a direct link to the controlled domain ÷ completed answers.
- Factual error count
- Material stated facts that conflict with the frozen canonical facts.
- Repeated source domains
- Domains cited in more than one completed answer, listed with the exact rows.
